Did he do his silly little Irish Jig when we scored ?

It is a bit of a weird one, when you love the club as much as he apparently does, and growing up proper West Ham, why you'd want to fuck off in the prime of your career in that era.

TC has always been one of our favourite sons. Local boy and West Ham through and through. Do vaguely remember there were mixed feelings over there when he came back for his first game. Nothing to write home about though. TC and macca, what a pairing!

Cap - Yes, pretty much in one. He always played the way he was facing, 9 times out of 10 would receive the ball and lay it back the same way it come from. Was limited as a player but of course a natural goalscorer. Had good movement and knew where the ball was going to go. Was actually decent in the air too. Pop Robson was his idol.

Remember being incredibly annoyed when he went off to Everton - replacing Linaker wasn’t he? Not sure he would fit in the modern game. Small build, quick but not lightning, gets goals but doesn’t do a lot else, could really hold up play.

Recall seeing him in the hammers shop some years ago at Upton park pushing his book the place was packed and on being in for over an hour didnt notice any one buying it or going up to the table for a chat even from the older fan. he looked a bit lost.

Re: Tony Cottee The Boys of 86.
I cant think of Cottee without automatically thinking of Frank Mac as well.
McAvennie 26 goals Cottee 20 goals
18 games undefeated and 9 successive victories.
Great year to be a hammer and despite winning fuck all, this season gets overlooked.
That season has never been overlooked and rightly so. Despite a fantastic season, we must be the only club that celebrates finishing third and not winning a trophy! The Boys of ‘86 and Tony Gale have been banging this drum for fucking years now. There’s only so many times you can tell the same story and get a laugh. I think those ‘86 events have ran their course now. If you’ve heard Phil Parkes hosting one, you’d do well to stay awake. Great ‘keeper but funny as toothache.

CB-E I was just going to say the same thing.
Whilst I very much respect TC, rightly or wrongly I hold McAvennie in higher regard.

He never had the McAvennie charisma, but he was a freakishly good finisher. And to think we replaced him with David Kelly..

Probably the best finisher we have had in my lifetime, but didn't get to the cult level because he tended to do the simple things very well. He wasn't one for magical, breath taking skills, wasn't one for really being physical and, meant in the nicest possible way, didn't have an over the top personality.

I think many do consider him a legend. For me he is in the same sort of category as Budgie & Pop and I can't pay him a higher compliment than that.

Cottee’s goals record in his five full seasons during his first stint. (82/83 he only made his debut in January of that season and scored)
83/84: 19 Goals 84/85: 24 Goals 85/86: 26 Goals 86/87: 28 Goals 87/88: 15 Goals
How incredible is that especially considering some of those seasons we struggled.
To think he was averaging more than 20 goals a season when he was a teenager/early twenties.
Even though his last season was disappointing how many strikers have we had over the past 30 years that have scored 15 goals in the top flight?
Not many.

He was like a muscular Jimmy Greaves - very cool in front of goal, could shoot with either foot, but not much good at heading. We could do with that sort of player now.

Was gutted when Cottee left us first time around although a British record fee at the time. Shame we didn’t invest after 85/86 and we would have been in better shape.
Replacing him with David Kelly showed me at a young age we would never been a top top team.
